Culture and Connection
Explore culture and connection to the land
I'll use this project to explore culture and connection to the land as I walk the Te Araroa Trail 2022/23, starting Nov. 5th. I'm a novice when it comes to culture and political aspects of Te Ao Māori (the Māori World) so please bear with me while I learn.
I'm an NZ / Irish / Canadian pākehā born and grew up in Ireland but have lived in NZ for 24 years. As part of my TA journey, I’d really like to explore themes of language and connection to the land and travelling, both from a Te Ao Māori perspective and from my Irish heritage and mythology. I'll use this page to link to relevant content and blog post.
I've created a map of marae and iwi areas of interest along the Te Araroa Trail. See basic map at https://arcg.is/10v0j or a map with more options at Te Araroa Trail - Te Ao Māori.
I'm an O'Brien and my clan origns are from Co. Clare in Ireland but the notion of clan hasn't existed for there for many centuries. The O'Brien dynasty was founded in the 10th century by Brian Boru of the Dál gCais.
